CommerceNet'98, a global summit on electronic commerce, will be held in Madrid, Spain, from 4 to 6 November 1998. The conference will address the opportunities presented by electronic commerce to new business, and new ways of working in the emerging Information Society. A key feature of the event will be an address from the European Commissioner for industry, Mr Martin Bangemann, on the European vision for electronic commerce.

The event will focus on questions such as the impact of an electronic commerce strategy on economic sectors, and the functions of individual organisations. The conference will also consider issues such as the best case studies with the largest positive demonstration effect for businessmen, and policy formulators in the field of electronic commerce.

The topics to be addressed during the conference will fall under the following headings:

- Supply chain management;
- Marketing and new business;
- Building confidence, security and legal aspects;
- Introduction to the socio-economic impact of electronic commerce;
- Status, scope and objectives of the Fifth RTD Framework Programme.
