This year's Europe against Cancer Week will focus on the issue of men and cancer, following the 1997 campaign which targeted woman's cancer. The week will run from 5 to 11 October in all EU Member States, as well as Norway and Iceland, with the exception of Greece because of elections. The Greek Cancer Week will run instead from 2 to 8 November 1998. In launching the scheme, the European Commissioner responsible for public health, Mr Padraig Flynn, stressed the importance of early detection and the message is summarised in the campaign's slogan - "If a symptom persists: do not wait!".

A public information campaign will be coordinated by the Europe Commission's Europe against Cancer programme and implemented by organisations in the Member States who are involved in the fight against cancer. The campaign will be supported by national health ministries and other public and private bodies. It will involve the distribution of around 10 million posters and leaflets all over Europe which aim to help people understand and recognise the warning signals which need to be looked after by a doctor. The information also gives advice on how to reduce the risk of getting cancer.

Men will be targeted in this year's campaign for a number of reasons and in particular the fact that around 25% more men than women die from cancer every year. The results of a recent survey among general practitioners also shows that men seem to have a different attitude towards health. The survey revealed that 82% of European doctors believe that women are more concerned about cancer prevention and early detection than men.
