A workshop on energy technologies and design will be held in Rome, Italy, on 27 October 1998, organised by the Cooperative Institute for Innovation (ICIE) and the Order of Engineers of Rome. The workshop will be funded within the framework of the EU's Organisation for the Promotion of Energy Technologies (OPET), with the aim of promoting and implementing the integration of energy engineering technologies and design techniques, thereby delineating the principles of energy-aware architecture.

The workshop will analyse the climatic and environmental factors that influence design and will introduce energy technologies from the most established to the most innovative. Designs with features of energy aware architecture and projects for energy saving financed through the EU's THERMIE programme for the promotion of energy technology will be presented during the workshop. The construction of buildings in which energy saving principles and the use of renewable energy are incorporated will also be discussed.

The specific topics to be addressed during the conference will include:

- Bioclimatic site design;
- Design of greenery as a climatising element;
- Containment of energy consumption through the rational use of architectural materials and components;
- Alternative energy sources and possibilities for use in civil and urban sectors;
- Energy efficient buildings financed by the EU THERMIE programme;
- Case studies on architecture which integrates active and passive solar systems;
- Actions for energy saving and the use of renewable resources.
