The third metadata conference will be held in Maryland, USA, on 6 and 7 April 1999. The conference will be organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The conference will provide a forum for discussion on the latest metadata-related issues, and will aim to contribute to participants' practical understanding of these issues.

Emphasis will be placed on innovative metadata projects or approaches and the presentation of best practice case studies. Topics to be covered will include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Metadata management;
- Specific issues in the application of metadata;
- Emerging applications in the global information infrastructure;
- Issues related to standards in metadata.
