An international conference on air quality in Europe will be held in Venice, Italy, from 19 to 21 May 1999. The conference will organised by the European Commission, DG XI, in association with the Joint Research Centre's Environment Institute, the European Federation of Clean Air and Environmental Protection Associations, and the Eurocities consortium.

The aim of the conference is to create an opportunity to present the most recent advances in research on air pollution and to debate the most effective technical and political strategies for its control. The research projects to be presented during the conference are those which focus on air pollution in the EU.

The conference will be divided into a series of sessions which will consist of oral and poster presentations. These will cover the following topics:

- European air quality regulation: development and implementation;
