The third world congress on alternatives and animal use in the life sciences will be held in Bologna, Italy, from 29 August to 2 September 1999, partly sponsored by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre. The aim of the congress will be to promote the exchange of information on the application of alternatives to laboratory animal procedures, considering replacement, reduction and refinement alternatives in biomedical research, education and testing.

The scientific programme will comprise a series of plenary lectures, parallel platform sessions, workshops, poster sessions and video demonstrations. There will be seven half-day parallel sessions on each of the five themes of the conference:

- The development of replacement alternative methods;
- The validation and regulatory acceptance of alternative test methods;
- Reduction and immunobiologicals;
- Refinement;
- Education, ethics and databases.
