A training programme on distribution and business practices in Japan will be held in Tokyo, from 8 to 18 March 1999. It will be organised by the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation and will be open to applicants following presentation by their company. There will be no tuition or registration fees for participants, however they will be expected to cover their own travel and living expenses. Target participants are those managers who intend to sell consumer goods in Japan.

The programme will consist of lectures, case studies, teamwork, and visits to Japanese manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers, and will aim to provide European industry with an opportunity to examine and discuss at first hand the problems and advantages related to doing business in Japan. Topics to be covered in detail during the course will include:

- Description of the distribution channels and business practices in Japan;
- Economic, cultural and socio-political factors affecting the distribution structure and business practices;
- New trends in the Japanese distribution system;
- Characteristics of Japanese wholesale and retail activities;
- How do Japanese manufacturers select, and adjust to, distribution channels?
- How should foreign companies market their consumer products in Japan?
