A seminar on materials and corrosion in sea water and brine environments will be held in Muscat, Oman, on 4 November 1998, funded by the Middle East Desalination Research Centre and the Nickel Development Institute. The event will be targeted at those involved in the design, planning, operation and maintenance of equipment and installations for desalination, power generation and the oil and gas industry.

The seminar will discuss aspects related to progress made in developing reliable materials for industries which have to deal with corrosion in seawater and similar brines, such as power utilities, oil and gas, shipping and marine technologies. The seminar will aim to assess further areas where mistakes can be avoided and costs saved through understanding corrosion and selecting the appropriate materials.

The following topics will be covered in detail during the conference:

- Corrosion of materials in sea water and brine;
- Vapour side corrosion in MSF plants;
- Materials selection for thermal desalination plants tubing;
- Materials for RO plants including computerised corrosion engineering guide.
