Luxembourg
The fifth European Commission conference on radioactive waste management, disposal and decommissioning will be held in Luxembourg, from 15 to 18 November 1999. The aim of the conference is to give a comprehensive overview of European Commission research activities in radioactive waste management and to present the key results from the Nuclear Fission Safety research and training programme (1994-1998). This will cover both technical and strategic, socio-political issues.

The conference will comprise a series of lectures, panel discussions and posters on the following topics:

- Waste management strategies and issues in the EU;
- Waste management and regulatory issues in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEECs) and the New Independent States (NIS);
- Public perception and communication;
- Research on partitioning and transmutation;
- Research on radioactive waste disposal;
- European Commission activities in radioactive waste management and decommissioning in the CEECs and the NIS;
- Decommissioning of nuclear installations.

Oral presentations by invited speakers during the conference will present overviews and analyses of waste management strategies and issues, as well as summaries of European Commission research projects. The more detailed project results will be presented as posters, and young scientists will also be encouraged to present their work.
