ISACC'99, the first international software assurance certification conference, will be held in Washington DC, USA, from 1 to 3 March 1999. This will be the first conference in an annual series to be devoted exclusively to software certification and will provide a forum where consumers and producers of software can exchange points of view on how best to certify software technology. The overall aim is to address a large demand for assuring that software will behave as advertised, or at least has specific properties advertised.

The theme of the conference will be "Early lessons learned and prospects" and the focus will be on the many different ways that certification is currently approached in the software industry. It will comprise a series of plenary sessions, as well as tutorials explaining how regulatory certification frameworks are enforced and a panel discussion on certification frameworks in other industries.

The topics to be discussed during the conference will include:

- European and Asian efforts in establishing certification standards;
- Government's role in software quality and consumer protection legislation;
- Software metrics and measurement;
- Software assurance tools;
- Software safety and security assessment;
- Uniform commercial code relating to software.
