A one-day conference on utility models as a cheaper and easier alternative to patents for protecting technical innovations will be held in London, United Kingdom, on 3 December 1998. The event will be co-sponsored by the Intellectual Property Institute and the Trade Marks, Patents and Designs Federation.

The aim of the conference is to inform SMEs on issues related to utility models and their potential application. One of the key features of the conference will be a presentation from a representative of the European Commission, DG XV, on a proposed Directive on utility models. The conference will also feature presentations from the Vice-President of the UK Intellectual Property Institute, Mr Justice Laddie, and from a representative of the UK Chartered Institute of Patent Agents.
