An international congress for the manufacturing industry will be held in Durham, United Kingdom, from 27 to 30 September 1999, in conjunction with the Northern Manufacturing Exhibition 1999. The aim of the congress is to bring researchers and industry closer together and to highlight the importance of both theoretical and applied research in the light of new shifts in the global economy.

The continuous exchange of scientific and technical information is of particular importance in a time of global challenges to the manufacturing industry. Other issues related to changes in industries such as microelectronics, automation, computer/information engineering and environmental protection are also of crucial importance to the manufacturing industry.

The congress organisers are currently seeking the submission of papers for presentation during the three symposia which will make up the congress. Topics of interest for each symposium include:

- International symposium on manufacturing systems (ISMS'99):
. Artificial intelligence in manufacturing;
. Concurrent and simultaneous engineering;
. Data capture automation;
. Database technology;
. Decision support tools;
. Electronic data interchange;

- International symposium on manufacturing technology (ISMT'99):
. Advanced manufacturing process;
. Aerospace manufacturing;
. Collaborative and distributed design;
. Construction as a manufacturing process;
. Design of manufacture and assembly;

- International symposium on manufacturing management (ISMM'99):
. Benchmarking;
. International technology transfer;
. Research directions for manufacturing management;
. Supplier development;
. World class manufacturing.
