Surface Treatment'99, the fourth international conference on computer methods and experimental measurements for surface treatment effects, will be held in Assisi, Italy, from 20 to 22 September 1999, organised by the Universita di Perugia, Italy, and the Wessex Institute of Technology, UK. The purpose of the conference is to promote international cooperation among scientists, engineers and technologists in order to assist a better understanding of issues such as fatigue fracture and wear resistance.

Particular emphasis will be placed on the application of advanced theories and experimental techniques and participants will be actively encouraged to critically review existing ideas and to explore new research. The conference organisers are currently seeking the submission of papers on topics which fall into the following categories:

- Shot peening;
- Surface coating;
- Rolling, grinding and polishing;
- Electrical, thermal, mechanical and chemical processes;
- Residual stress effects;
- Changing material properties;
- Transient field problems;
- Solidification induced effects;
- Corrosion and stress corrosion;
- Fretting fatigue;
- Fracture and fatigue mechanics;
- Laser cutting and surface treatment.
