A conference on environmental performance and competitiveness will be held in Hanover, Germany, on 9 and 10 June 1999. The conference will address the theme "Sustainable business strategies in global markets" and will target company practitioners and representatives from business associations, politics and government authorities, the scientific community as well as from environmental and consumer organisations. One of the key features of the event will be a presentation from the European Commissioner for competition, Karel van Miert.

The overall aim of the conference is to intensify dialogue between company practice, science and politics. It will deal with three main topics covering the international market regulations, the setting up of a global policy framework for a sustainable market economy, and the role of large scale corporations in the drafting of global market regulations and the establishment of international environmental standards. The importance of information and communication in the competitive market process, and its role in the pursuit of environmentally friendly business strategies will also be discussed.

The main features of the event will include:

- The presentation of innovative examples for the creation of global environmental regulations which also secure environmental protection in international competition;
- The identification of starting points for the integration of environmental demands within economic policy;
- The presentation of best practice case studies for environmental differentiation strategies, environmental market development strategies and cost reduction strategies;
- The analysis of the significance of large scale corporations in the development of global market regulations;
- The examination of the significance of environmental groups and consumer councils and science for market and corporate competitive processes.
