Researchers' Night in Europe: What’s going on in Italy

September 2007 will be again an important appointment for researchers all over Europe.

The third edition of the “Researchers’ Night” will take place on the 28th of September, with 40 events organized, under the coordination of the DG Research, in 29 Countries.

28 September 2007 - 28 September 2007
Austria
The FP 7 “People” Specific programme dedicates around 3.000.000 euros a year to promote researchers’ role in the society and to communicate to citizens how important is their job for the quality of daily life and for social and economic development in Europe.
For the 2007 call for proposal the main objective is attracting big numbers of participants and make them having fun with researchers. No doubt that the secret, to be successful on Friday night, is offering and interesting and amusing choice of activities, a programme apt to attract adults, youth and kids.

What is Italy proposing for the 28th of September 2007?
Italy has been, since the 2006 edition, one of the more active and creative Member State.
Four projects, involving four regions, have been selected and are now running to work out four extraordinary shows, where science and research will play the lead role.

Piedmont
In Piedmont the 28th of September programme is quite wide and cover four of the eight main towns of the Region: Torino, Alessandria, Biella e Vercelli will set up open air labs where researchers and citizens will play together.
The three Universities and several research centers (Istituto Mario Boella, CNR Area di Ricerca, INFN, INRIM the most renowned) will drive people into the fantastic world of sciences through first hand experiments and interactive experiences.

In parallel younger participants and kids will have the opportunity to play with sciences:
a treasure hunting to discover new elements, a competition to play the energy, an ice cream made with nitrogen and fresh fruits, the drawing competitions.

Especially in Torino the Researcher’s Night has grown up in 2007 and will offer around 40 open labs, science and innovation cafés, Isaac Newton playing in English, several games for kids and adults, free visits to fours scientific museums, the opening of an interactive and international exhibition on Space, organized by the regional Observatory with the support of the ESA, who will provide the Cassini-Huygens and the Cluster Scale Models, and last but not least the “Research marathon” organized by researchers for secondary schools students.

After the extraordinary success of the 2006 event with 6.000 visitors to the open labs, partners are investing energies and enthusiasm to repeat the show.

Lazio
In Lazio, which is aggregating around Frascati town all the relevant national research centers, partners are on the opposite working to attract citizens into the high tech laboratories, which are a unique real asset of the region.
Local actors, coordinated by the INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physic), want to transform for one night Frascati into a “Science City”: interactive activities, games, conferences and the Agorà (room and time to approach research topics in a easy way under the scientific direction of researchers) will be located in different corner of the town and a map will drive participants to satisfy their curiosity.
La Notte della Ricerca in Frascati will offer of course to visit labs but also to attend conferences, multimedia projections, and a testing of regional foods and wines.
Among the most important research centers involved in the performance: INAF for the astrophysics, ENEA for the basic research, CNR and ESA-ESRIN for Space research.

Puglia
In Puglia the Researchers’Night will be performed by three Universities (of Bari, of Foggia and of Salento) by the Bari’s Politecnico together with the “Jean Monnet” LUM, CNR, ENEA and Tecnopolis, under the ARTI coordination.
As in Piedmont several cities will host an attractive show, this year dedicated to the “creativity”. This theme will characterize all the experiments, the performances, the interactive experiences Puglia will perform in the historical venues, which will recall to citizens how innovation and new technologies have roots in a fertile traditional ground.

Campagna
In Campagna the city of Naples will invite kids, youth and adults to discover historical typical location under a different light: squares and streets will be transformed in open laboratories and in interactive meeting point where researchers will unveil to common people the beauty of their job.
Music will be a continuum of the Researchers Night, different groups will play different music becoming the sounds track on an event that wants to be for all.
Kids from schools will be protagonists of the drawing competition as well of an archeological simulation explained and driven by researchers.
