The European Commission and Parliament will organise a joint conference on lessons to be learned from the BSE crisis, which will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 30 November and 1 December 1998. The aim is take stock of the causes of the crisis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and its implications for consumers. Key features of the event will include a presentation from the European Commissioner for agriculture, Franz Fischler, and Ken Collins MEP, Chairman of the European Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Consumer Protection.
Discussions will be grouped under the following session headings:
- Scientific advice and research;
- Consequences for agricultural and food policy;
- Consequences for consumer protection, control and food safety;
- Implementation of the European Parliament's recommendations and measures for the future.
