NAV'98, an international conference on satellite navigation and safety, will be held in London, United Kingdom, from 9 to 11 December 1998, organised by the British Royal Institute of Navigation. The aim of the conference is to discuss safety considerations with engineers, operators and regulators in the light of planned high dependence on satellite systems, often as a sole means of navigation. The realisation of the vulnerability of satellite signals to interference has increased awareness of the necessity for back-up aids, perhaps on a terrestrial level.

The discussions during the conference will focus on the vulnerability of systems, especially in the light of upcoming solar activity. A wide range of topics will be addressed under the following session headings:

- Legal and institutional issues;
- SAR and safety;
- Solar impacts;
- GPS enhancements;
- Electronic enhancements;
- Electronic charting and displays;
- Frequencies and interference;
- Advanced applications.
