Socio-economic research within the Framework Programmes

A workshop organised within the EU's specific RTD programmes for Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS) and Targeted Socio-economic Research (TSER) will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 25 November 1998. The aim of the event is to provide a meeting point for information exchange between the two groups of researchers.
The Fifth RTD Framework Programme calls for a closer integration of technological RTD with the socio-economic context and policy development aspects of the Information Society. A need for relevant socio-economic works is therefore anticipated, with input directly into the IST programme, to ensure greater industrial and technological foresight inputs into TSER activities, and to ensure greater cross-programme awareness of activities and results.
The workshop should enable those researchers who participated in research under the Fourth RTD Framework Programme to gain a greater awareness of each others' environments and activities, and understand how to access information about ongoing work and results. The workshop should also help participants to develop contact mechanisms that will facilitate strong and well-targeted work within the Fifth Framework Programme.
Short overview presentations summarising the socio-economic work undertaken within the relevant programmes of the Fourth RTD Framework Programme, as well as presentations from appropriate projects will be delivered during the workshop. In addition, ways to improve synergy and cross-fertilisation between the Framework Programmes and the socio-economic communities will also be discussed.
