South Africa looking for energy FP7 partnerships

A presentation on the work of the new South African National Energy Research Institute will be held in Brussels on Wednesday 10 October 2007 in order to encourage European research and technology actors to cooperate with South Africa in FP7 energy partnerships.

7 October 2007 - 7 October 2007
South Africa
South Africa’s new Ten Year Innovation Plan identified the search for energy security, as one of the five big innovation challenges for South Africa. The rich and diverse portfolio of energy R&D activities in South Africa includes, apart from a substantial focus on nuclear energy, work in the following areas:

- Energy infrastructure optimization;
- Energy efficiency and demand-side management;
- The impact of energy use on the environment;
- The use of energy to stimulate socio-economic development;
- Cleaner fossil fuel use, including clean coal technologies;
- Carbon capture and sequestration;
- Renewable energy sources, including solar, hydro, wind, ocean/wave, biomass and waste;
- Alternative energy sources, including fuel cells and hydrogen;
- Energy planning and modelling; and
- Energy policy research

Key actors entrusted with energy R&D in South Africa include the South African National Energy Research Institute (SANERI) – details at (http://www.cef.org.za/content/view/26/16/(opens in new window)) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s (CSIR) energy research groups (http://www.csir.co.za.)

Dr Thembakazi Mali, Senior Manager: Clean Energy Solutions at the SANERI, will deliver the presentation on the work of SANERI at an event to be held at the South African Mission to the European Union (Rue Montoyer 17-19, Brussels, 1000, Metro: Trone) on Wednesday 10 October 2007 at 16:00. It is envisaged that the presentation and discussion will conclude at 17:00, following which refreshments will be served to facilitate networking. Dr Mali is also an advisor to South African’s FP7 National Contact Point for energy research.

All interested parties are welcome to attend. Confirmation of attendance to daan.dutoit@dst.gov.za.

The event is presented as part of the European South African Science and Technology Advancement Programme (ESASTAP.)
