Chemistry of metals in medicine

A workshop on the chemistry of metals in medicine will be held in Ivrea, Italy, from 5 to 8 December 1998. The workshop is being held within the framework of COST Action D8. The aim of the event is to discuss the latest research and scientific developments on a number of topics related to metals and diseases, metal complexes in therapy, MRI Contrast Agents, in vitro diagnostic probes, radiopharmaceuticals and radiosensitisers.

Particular topics to be discussed during the workshop include:

- Iron and neurochemistry in Parkinson's disease;
- Aluminium complexes and toxicology;
- Design and evaluation of biomolecules for internal radionuclide therapy with the use of radiometals;
- The development of chelating agents for alpha-emitter therapy;
- Recent advances in DNA cleavage mediated by metalloporphyins;
- Ruthenium complexes as nitric oxide scavengers: a potential therapeutic approach to nitric oxide mediated disease;
- Parallel processing in aqueous solution;
- Rare earth cryptates as a tool for the study of molecular interactions in biology;
- Radiopharmaceuticals: from the laboratory to the market.
