A workshop on the Harsh Environments Initiative (HEI) of the European and Canadian Space Agencies will be held in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, on 27 and 28 January 1999. The aim of this event is to discuss the various aspects of HEI which has shown the value of space technologies for operational applications in the harsh environments of the oil, gas and mining industries.

The workshop will demonstrate the market-driven application of space technologies in current projects, and also identify key opportunities for involvement in future activities. The key challenges of operating in harsh environments will also be discussed by industry leaders, alongside the potential for space technologies to mitigate these challenges. Special emphasis will be placed on the opportunities for SMEs to participate in the initiative.

The following topics will be discussed in detail during the workshop:

- Overview of the Harsh Environments Initiative;
- Industrial perspectives of harsh environments in the context of the mining, deep water operations, underground tunnelling and forestry sectors;
- The oil and gas operations node;
- The ESA Spacelink Group;
- Offshore operations in the North Sea;
- New opportunities and future activities.

A special session of the conference will be devoted to HEI testbed demonstration projects on the mining operations node covering sensori-motor augmented reality for telerobotics, geosensing, micro-seismic and pressure monitoring systems and mining simulation tools.
