The seventh conference of the Federation of European Chemical Societies (FECS) Division for Chemistry and the Environment, organised in collaboration with the Portuguese Chemistry Society, will be held in Porto, Portugal, from 27 to 30 August 2000. The conference will address the issue of trace metal speciation in the aquatic environment, and will bring together scientists from different areas to discuss current knowledge and future developments.

Topics to be discussed during the conference will include:

- Technique development and novel applications in the various aquatic compartments;
- Quality control and needs for standardisation;
- Sensors and biosensors;
- Influence of natural and anthropogenic ligands on trace metal uptake and toxicity;
