An international conference on human fungal pathogens, organised within the series of European Research Conferences of the European Science Foundation and supported within the Euroconferences activity of the EU's Training and Mobility of Researchers programme (TMR), will be held in Granada, Spain, from 4 to 8 September 1999.

Pathogenic fungi are emerging as a major medical problem, as the frequency of life-threatening fungal infections is rising, and therefore new effective antifungal treatments are needed to combat these infections. The development of these treatments will be facilitated by a greater understanding of fungal virulence and host-fungal interactions.

The conference will address two important and related virulence factors, that of cellular morphogenesis and the fungal cell wall. These factors will combine to promote fungal adherence to host tissues, tissue penetration, and the evasion of host immunological defences. The latest developments in these areas will be discussed during the conference by researchers in the field, in the context of recent advances in the molecular dissection and genome sequencing of pathogenic fungi.
