A conference addressing "The deep earth: theory, experiment and observation", will be held in Acquafredda di Maratea, Italy, from 11 to 16 September 1999. The event will be organised by the European Science Foundation, as part of a series of European Research Conferences (EURESCO), and will be supported by the Euroconferences activity of the EU's Training and Mobility of Researchers programme (TMR).

The aim of the meeting is to bring together researchers from all branches of the earth sciences who are interested in the Earth's interior. This will include seismologists, geochemists, petrologists, geophysical modellors and mineral physicists. The event will serve as a forum for discussion and will aim to promote the exchange of results relevant to the deep earth and introduce young and non-specialist researchers to constraints associated with the research of deep earth problems. The meeting will comprise four days of lectures given by invited speakers, as well as a series of poster sessions. The four main themes to be addressed are:

- Constitution of the deep earth;
- The Earth's magnetic field;
- Convection in the earth;
- Mantle mineralogy.
