Belgium
A seminar to launch the European Business Register will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 2 December 1998, organised by the Italian Association of Chambers of Commerce (UNIONCAMERE). The European Commissioner responsible for the internal market, Mr Mario Monti, will participate in the event which will serve to launch the European Business Register (EBR).

The EBR started as a pilot project in 1992, supported by the European Commission, under the leadership of the Italian Chambers of Commerce. The register currently enables access to the data held by the business registers of 10 Member States. A certain number of the countries from Central and Eastern Europe and the New Independent States have also undertaken technical steps to join the network.

The main topics to be discussed during the upcoming seminar include:

- How the major difficulties in building up EBR were overcome;
- How can the EBR data get Community wide acknowledgement;
- What role could the Chambers of Commerce undertake in distributing information held at a national level.
