Fashion and Nanotechnology

Conference at London School of Fashion examines how small technologies are transforming the appearance and approach to fashion.

24 January 2008

Micro and nanotechnologies have already had a huge impact on the textile industry, with nanotechnologies accounting for a US$13.6 billion market in 2007 and expected to grow to $115 billion by 2012.

But how are these technologies changing the appearance of and approach to fashion?

MICRO AND NANOTECHNOLOGIES FOR FASHION AND TEXTILES
(www.cientifica.eu/fashion) to be held on January 24, 2008 at London College of Fashion’s Rootstein Hopkins Space, is a joint effort of Cientifica
Ltd. and the London College of Fashion, and will highlight how small technologies are transforming fashion and further enabling the fashion and
textile industries to deliver new products and designs.

The one-day event has brought together both experts in nanotechnology and fashion to discuss the opportunities provided by both nanotechnologies and microtechnologies, and are now having an impact on the fashion and textile industries.

Fashion experts such as Helen Storrey, a world-wide noted fashion designer, and co-developer of Wonderland—which explores how new materials can make consumer products less damaging to the planet and Simon Colbeck, Technical Manager Menswear, Marks & Spencer will be highlighted presenters at the event.

Other confirmed speakers include:
• Prof. Richard Jones, Professor of Physics, Sheffield University, Senior Strategic Advisor for Nanotechnology for the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council
• Prof. George Stylios, Professor of Textiles, Heriot-Watt University
• Brian McCarthy, Director, Technitex
• Tim Harper, CEO, Cientifica
• David Lussey, Managing Director, Petratech
• Dr Jenny Tillotson, Scentsory Designer, Senior Research Fellow, Department of Fashion & Textiles Design, Innovation Centre at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design
