The first major conference following the European Commission's White Paper on renewable energy, entitled the "World Sustainable Energy Fair" will be held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from 25 to 27 May 1999. The event will be held within the framework of the EU's ALTENER programme for the promotion of renewable energy sources.

The conference will examine how sustainable energy will affect the everyday existence of Europeans. It will explain country by country and technology by technology the actions needed and the market opportunities possible. In addition, a series of workshops will be held to help find the best strategies to implement the necessary legislative actions. Progress on the implementation of Community policies in the field of renewable energy will also be assessed during the conference, as well as the difficulties in implementation and how to overcome them.

The key features of the event will include the following:

- EU statement on the targets from now until the year 2015;
- Statements on targets until 2015 from every EU Member State;
- Financial groups and economic forecasting;
- How the targets will be achieved;
- Input from construction groups on the new Europe;
- The changing landscape as seen by agricultural lobbying groups;
- Consumer groups and the presentation of social habits;
- Private sector finance.

In addition, a seminar on financing green energy, organised by EUROSOLAR, will be open to participants of the conference on the second day. The seminar will discuss new and innovative ways to calculate costs and pay back rules. The different ways to introduce electricity generated from renewable sources, in order to meet the requirements laid down in the White Paper will also be discussed. The following topics will provide the focus for discussion during the conference:

- Rules for fair access for renewables to the electricity market;
- Guidelines on the price to be paid for electricity from renewable sources;
- Environmental benefits of renewable energy sources;
- Fiscal and financial measures for renewable energy sources;
- Other financing schemes.
