e-Photon/One EU Network of Excellence presents achieved results in Turin
Afterwards, the Network’s coordination will skip to Belgium: the next phase of e-Photon/One will be coordinated by IBBT, from Gent University.
Professor Fabio Neri, project coordinator from Politecnico di Torino, recalls which are the major objectives of the network:
- Integrate and focus the rich know-how available in Europe on optical communications and networking, both in universities and in research centers of well-positioned telecom manufacturers and operators.
- Favor coordination among the participants to reach a consensus on the engineering choices towards the deployment of optical networks.
- Provide guidelines for the design of an optical Internet backbone, metro, access and in-home infrastructure, supporting traffic engineering and quality of service management in an end-to-end perspective.
- Understand how the intrinsic characteristic of optical technologies can be exploited to provide large bandwidth together with acceptable levels of quality of service and protection/ restoration inside and across network domains.
- Promote and organize integration activities aiming at establishing a good exchange of information, and long-term collaborations.
- Promote and organize activities to disseminate knowledge on optical networks in the technical community and to the general public.
He is also telling us that efforts in dissemination have been consistent and that the project web page (http://www.e-photon-one.org(opens in new window)) has been recognized as a major tool for integration and for collecting project results, such as publications and reports.
e-Photon/One produced 97 joint papers in the first six months and more than 140 have followed. During the first phase of life, over than 40 personnel exchanges have been planned.
Two technical schools were organized, in September (Zagreb) and in July (Brest) 2007 and partner organizations worked out a joint master programme in Optical Communication and Networks.
e-Photon/One is producing the “Optical Switching and Networking (ONS) newsletter and Professor Neri from Turin is co-editor in chief.
