The European Commission, DG XII, is hosting a conference under its International Cooperation programme 14 and 15 December 1998, where Central and Eastern European countries can present themselves to the European research community.

"New Partners, New Opportunities" allows the 11 countries that have applied for membership of the European Union to forge stronger ties with the EU research community. Keynote speakers will address issues concerning partnerships with EU researchers, such as "Experience and outlook of new partners" or "Expectations of the EU scientific community".

Participants are expected to come from candidate countries, Member States and Associated Countries. There will also be representatives from the different European Institutions and Commission staff that will manage the Fifth Framework Programme.

In addition there will be an exhibition throughout the conference, where each of the 11 candidate countries can present their research potential. Information on the Fifth Framework Programme will also be presented.

The 11 countries involved in the conference are Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia.
