The 2008 NEM Summit "Towards Future Media Internet" is a major conference and exhibition devoted to the field of Networked and Electronic Media and ICT at large. During this event, which will take place on October 13-15 in Saint-Malo, France, the VITALAS project will present its first multimedia search engine prototype.

VITALAS stands for Video & image Indexing and reTrievAl in the LArge Scale and is an integrated project funded by the IST 6th Framework Programme of the European Commission. The VITALAS system is a B2B tool, which enables content-based retrieval and browsing of very large audio and visual datasets without pre-existing metadata.

The project partners are working on the next generation of multimedia search engines. VITALAS proceeds through different advanced technologies representing its core strengths:
• Automatic cross-media enrichment and annotation functionalities,
• Interactive cross-media retrieval mechanisms,
• Performance and scalability facilities
• Advanced and innovative interfaces through content similarities maps for searching and browsing large audio visual archives
• Flexible and extensible system architecture.

Moreover, VITALAS offers personalisation and security functionalities that allow the system to adapt to a user’s context and access right's situation.

Currently the demonstration aims to show search functionalities on 100,000 pictures set provided by the Belga photo agency which could be updated by incremental indexing of external new incoming visual content. Next steps of VITALAS progress will consist on the integration of cross-media content enrichment and retrieval functionalities for 10,000 hours of video material and 3,000,000 images.

Scientific coordination of VITALAS is headed by INRIA (the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control), while the management of the project is ensured by ERCIM (the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics). For further information, please visit: http://vitalas.ercim.org(opens in new window)
