International Conference Open Access Infrastructures

The Greek National Documentation Centre (EKT) organizes a conference entitled "Open Access Infrastructures: the Future of Scientific Communication" to be held on December 15-16, 2008 in Athens at the premises of the National Hellenic Research Foundation. The conference (www.openaccess.gr/conference2008) will present the latest developments on Repositories and Open Access Journals.

15 December 2008 - 16 December 2008
Austria
Conference speakers include academics, researchers, publishers from Europe and North America, as well as representatives from the European Commission. They will present views and experiences, and raise important questions on Open Access Infrastructures (Repositories and Scientific Journals) and the relevant emerging prospects on scholarly communication and the dissemination of knowledge.

The conference is addressed to the academic and research community, to businesses, government institutions, libraries, as well as the wider public. Attendance is open and free of charge. Electronic registration to the conference is available and highly recommended.

In recent years there is an increasing interest in the scientific community for the development of alternative tools that ensure the fast publication, dissemination and exploitation of scientific results.

Following the international trends the National Documentation Centre develops national Open Access infrastructures aiming at providing open access to scientific and cultural content: the Repository Helios of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, Repositories for the Humanities and Health Sciences, the National Archive of PhD Theses, as well as international Open Access Scientific Journals.

The infrastructures operate on interactive digital environment for disseminating knowledge overcoming any geographical or technical barrier. They run on open-source software and are managed in collaboration with scientific and research organizations.

Information on Open Access, relevant national and international policies, activities by the National Documentation Centre, as well as events and news from Greece and the world are now available in a portal at www.openaccess.gr.

The aforementioned Open Access Infrastructures are developed by the project "National Information System for Research and Technology, Phase III - Open Access Electronic Repositories and Journals". The project is being implemented by the National Documentation Centre within the framework of the "Digital Greece" (www.psifiakiellada.gr). It is co-funded 80% by the European Union – European Regional Development Fund and 20% by the Hellenic State (Operational Programme "Information Society", 3rd CSF 2000-2006).Information - Conference Registration:
