The first CRAFT Information Days will take place in Lisbon on 3-4 December 1992. CRAFT (Cooperative Research Action for Technology) is a sub-research programme within the European Community's BRITE/EURAM II programme for industrial and materials technologies.

CRAFT is specifically aimed at innovative small and medium sized enterprises having little or no research capacity of their own. It seeks to encourage cooperative research, bringing several SMEs together to form a consortium which entrusts one or more research centres to carry out work concerning their common technological needs.

A large number of heads of industrial research, directors of research associations and centres, policy decision-makers and SME support organizers are expected to attend the Lisbon meeting. Mr. Thomaz, Portugal's Secretary of State for Science and Technology, Mr. Monteio, Portugal's Secretary of State for Industry, as well as Mr. H. Tent, Deputy Director-General of DG XII of the Commission of the European Communities, will open the two days of conferences and discussions.

Four workshops will take place in parallel on the 4th of December. These will examine the potential and scope for CRAFT cooperative research in four targeted industrial sectors, and will discuss topics arising as a result of surveys carried out to identify the technological areas where these sectors have their main interests or challenges:

- Stone, ceramics and other construction materials (recycling, environmental problems, standardization, natural raw materials, new ceramic products, use of new technologies);

- Forging and stamping (automation and computer applications, optimization and production management, metalworking technologies, energy saving, new materials);

- Wood, cork and furniture (materials and treatments, production processes and design, organizational tools and recycling of residuals from manufacturing processes);

- Plastics and their processing (recycling, composites, resin transfer moulding, rubber technology, bonding fibres in polymers, injection moulding, quality control in production, surface treatment of plastics, communication systems between design and mould production and between design and strength and stiffness calculation, polyurethane adhesives, degradation and/or protection of plastics.

A proposers forum scheduled for the 3rd December will provide an opportunity for actual and potential CRAFT participants to meet, exchange ideas on research and prepare proposals for future projects.
