4. European Forum on Safety & Security Systems, 4th-5th June 2009 in Potsdam (Germany)

Safety is a fundamental basis of our civil society. It contributes considerably to the safeguarding of civil liberty in Europe and ensures the functioning of the economy. Safety-relevant research results are very often being applied in various sectors of the economy.

Also the European Commission has made allowance for the growing significance of safety-relevant research in the 7th Framework Programme. The member states have allocated a total of 1.4 Billion Euro to this programme component for the period 2007–2013.

Even if there is a lot of work to be done in research we should not underestimate the challenge of forming a European security market. Developing new technologies and solutions alone will not fit the needs of end-users coming from the public and private sector. The crux of the matter is forming systems for complex challenges and the integration in existing structures. The conference addresses especially the transfer and implementation aspects of new technologies.

Besides the public sector private companies are important players in the security sector. For some of them it is their business. For others security regulations are a major aspect of their core business. Any security solution must be payable in relation to the risk. The acceptance of security solutions and the human factor are further aspects to be considered.

A common EU-Security Label might be an important element of a European market strategy as a decision help for end-users as well as an export accelerator for outside Europe. Interoperability is urgently needed in case of major security incidents. Some standardisation might safe lives and shrink costs.

Expert’s fora on the latest research and development results in safety engineering are forming the frame of the two-day conference. The event also provides the opportunity to present prototypes and new developments under real conditions. In order to improve the compatibility of European safety companies, cooperation and partnerships between relevant actors in companies, research and development are also necessary. Therefore the European Enterprise Network will provide an information and networking platform during the conference.Find out more on: http://www.safety-and-security.eu(opens in new window)
