CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Energy, Environment, and Security Summit
Week of July 26th, 2009 in Garmisch, Germany

Sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
Science and Technology Directorate, Infrastructure and Geophysical Division

Since science and technology plays an ever increasing role in global response to the threat of terrorism, DHS is seeking global solutions that integrate traditional security measures with innovative applications combining security, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

Questions to be explored during this summit include:

• What types of new and innovative security and energy efficiency systems can be introduced over the next few years for the replacement and renewal of buildings and infrastructure? What types of new cooperation or conflict patterns might emerge when combining energy, environment, and security in decision making for infrastructure investments? What are the relationships and cost effective opportunities for DHS with other governmental agencies, international entities, private sector, and academia?

• How can resilience be achieved to address problems related to deterioration, obsolesce, unsustainability, and vulnerability of buildings and infrastructure? Which are the conflicting and balancing issues in multihazard design?

• How best to capitalize on the large variety of new advanced materials and intelligent systems that have been developed in the last decade, by industry and research institutions? What are the life cycle cost implications?

• What short- and mid- term environmental friendly technologies can be used in the replacement of existing infrastructure and the building stock? What is the economy’s relationship to environment, energy, and security and how does that impact future innovative research and development opportunities?
