The European Commission is jointly hosting, with EFTA, an international conference, "Standardization for the 21st century" in Berlin between 15 and 17 March 1999.

The conference will aim to stimulate and gather fresh ideas and innovative solutions regarding the future role of the European standardization system in the light of the challenges it faces.

The main theme is the enlargement of the European union to integrate the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, as the changeover from the national standardization systems evolved under planned economies to the voluntary system of European standardization is a high priority for both government and industry in the applicant countries.

The other main themes are:

- Promotion, to strengthen involvement in and commitment to the voluntary European standardization system;
- Global trade, to meet international needs; and;
- Future standardization issues.
