EuroNanoForum 2009 in Prague, 2-5 June 2009

European and International Forum on Nanotechnology organized by the Technology Centre of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic with the support of the European Commission under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic as one of the official events of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

2 June 2009 - 5 June 2009
Austria
EuroNanoForum 2009 is already the fourth conference on nanotechnology organized with the support of the European Commission by the country at the occasion of its EU Presidency. The first EuroNanoForum 2003, held in Trieste during the Italian EU Presidency helped the European Commission to formulate the key elements for a complex and responsible approach to the use of nanotechnology and to the future strategy for the EU nanotechnology research. The outputs were integrated in the EU Action Plan on Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies for the years 2005-9. The second EuroNanoForum 2005 in Edinburgh was focused on nanomedicine and human health care. Applications of nanotechnology in industry were the subject of the third EuroNanoForum 2007 held in Düsseldorf. Aim of this event was to highlight the need to transfer the nanotechnology research results to industrial production and thus to increase the competitiveness of European industry.

The EuroNanoForum 2009 conference will build up on the success of previous EuroNanoForums (Trieste 2003, Edinburgh 2005, Düsseldorf 2007) and will address “Nanotechnology for sustainable economy”. The choice of this theme stems from the shared global experience that the application of nanotechnology leads to more efficient production with lower environmental impact, providing technologies for new products and production processes while still meeting requirements for human health care. This theme is also in line with the Czech EU Presidency priorities, three E´s: Economy, Energy, Europe in the world.

EuroNanoForum 2009 takes the unique opportunity for meetings of researchers and experts of various kinds of industry. It offers sections focused on:
? Nanotechnology in eco- and energy-efficient industrial production
? Nanotechnology for energy production and management
? Nanotechnology for health and medicine
? Environmental applications and implications of nanotechnology
? Prospects of industrial nanotechnologies
? Nanotechnology: education, standardization and social perception of benefits and risks.

A video-projection of the presentation given by Sir Harold Kroto, Nobel price-winner of the 1996, will launch the scientific programme of the EuroNanoForum 2009. During the conference many leading experts in nanotechnology will present their results and experience, as for instance:

Michael Graetzel, Swiss Federal Institute of Nanotechnology Lausanne, Switzerland (solar energy)
Flemming Besenbacher, University of Aarhus, Denmark (environment)
Patrick Boisseau, CEA-Leti Grenoble, France (nanobiotechnology and nanomedicine)
Markus Pridöl, Evonik Industries AG, Germany (nanotechnology in chemical production)
Peter Krueger, Bayer Material Science AG, Germany (application of carbon nanotubes).

Also Czech experts with international reputation were selected as keynote speakers, as for example Karel Ulbrich (Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry ASCR), Eva Sykova (Institute of Experimental Medicine ASCT), Tomas Jungwirth (Institute of Physics ASCR) or Pavel Jelinek (Institute of Physics ASCR). Other Czech experts will give short presentations or act as Chairs and Rapporteurs.

EuroNanoForum 2009 will also include eight workshops on industrial nanotechnology, nanomaterials for energy, nanotechnology for the environment and water treatment etc. One of these workshops is organized by an initiative of Czech scientists called Czech Nanoteam and will present up-to-date knowledge of selected not common nanostructures. At the same time this workshop will show and discuss opportunities for nano studies at the Czech universities.

An industrial exhibition will take place in parallel to the scientific programme of EuroNanoForum 2009. Foreign and Czech companies will present their products exploiting nanotechnology in different branches.

Nano Brokerage Event Prague 2009 on 4th June 2009 is another part of the programme aiming to find partners for international cooperation in nanotechnology research and development. It is organized by the Business and Innovation Centre Plzen in cooperation with the Technology Centre ASCR as an event of the Enterprise Europe Network.

A competition of young scientists will be organized in the scientific poster section. Author of the best poster presentation will be awarded.

There will be a Road show exhibition of the NanoTruck themed "NanoTruck – High tech from the nano cosmos”. This mobile laboratory aims to inform common public on nanotechnologies, their applications, benefits and risks. Nanotruck was built under the support of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research within the High-Tech Strategy for Germany „Nanoinitiative - Action Plan 2010“. Nanotruck arrives to Prague on 2nd June and will be open for the public free of charge from 3rd to 5th June.

Technology Centre ASCR, the organizer of the EuroNanoForum 2009, is the National contact organisation for the EU Framework programmes. It gives consultations, provides monitoring and evaluates Czech participation in the EU Framework programmes. It organizes different national and international conferences, as for instance Conference on Nanomedicine (Prague, 2006) in the field of nanotechnology, and takes part in EU projects, as for instance NanoRoadMap (6th Framework Programme), ObservatoryNano and FramingNano (both 7th Framework Programme) .Press programme
A press conference and four briefings will be organized on 2nd – 3rd June. Selected European projects will be presented there. One of the briefings will be devoted to the Czech nanotechnology research and development. Exact dates and information on accreditation will be published in the next press release and at the EuroNanoForum 2009 web site in the "Media" section.
