The focus of the summer school will be on citizen/public security on a broad scale, from urban issues to terrorist threat, its determinants and measures designed to improve security. Participants will gain insight into the determinants of actual and perceived security, and into which interventions are effective for increasing actual and perceived security.

13 July 2009 - 17 July 2009
Austria
The transdisciplinary Summer School “Perception of (In-)Security and Fear of Crime” is organized by the European Union research consortium CPSI – Changing Perceptions of Security and Inter¬ventions (EU 7th Framework Programme – FP7) and operated by the CEUSS | Center for European Security Studies of Sigmund Freud PrivateUniversity Vienna (SFU) as a partner in this con¬sortium and committed to academic state-of-the art perspectives as well as practical knowledge.

The focus of the summer school will be on citizen/public security on a broad scale, from urban issues to terrorist threat, its determinants and measures designed to improve security. Participants will gain insight into the determinants of actual and perceived security, and into which interventions are effective for increasing actual and perceived security. Particular attention will be paid to the association (and dissociation) of actual (or objective) and perceived (or subjective) security and the determinants of how secure we, as citizens, “actually” and subjectively feel. In this regard, the role of human factors, cultural factors, mass-communication factors and others will be explored.

The summer school’s international faculty represents CPSI consortium members and related experts from eight countries and will provide participants with the unique opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of cutting-edge civil security research, at the same time practicing methods as they are being applied and refined in actual ongoing research. Moreover, participants will learn about practically relevant conclusions and recommendations to enhance citizen security as they are being derived from research results. An additional focus will be on appreciating and accommodating cultural differences in risk perception and the social consequences thereof.
