New initiative to boost South Africa - EU aeronautics and air transport research cooperation

A new Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) Coordination and Support Action, AeroAfrica-EU, has been launched to promote aeronautics and air transport research cooperation between South Africa and the European Union, as well as exploring the potential for other African countries to participate in such partnerships.

22 June 2009 - 22 June 2009
Austria
The project will be presented at a special launch presentation to be held in Brussels on Monday 22 June 2009. Further details on the project are available at: http://www.aeroafrica-eu.org(opens in new window).

The AeroAfrica-EU consortium consists of partners from South Africa (the Department of Science and Technology and the National Aerospace Centre of Excellence at the University of the Witwatersrand), France (Aerospace Valley), Germany (Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology), Sweden (Royal Institute of Technology) and the United Kingdom (Cranfield University).

The project has the task to identify research areas where potential exists for mutually beneficial (South) African - European aeronautics and air transport R&D cooperation, and to undertake concerted efforts, through for example awareness-raising and partner-matching to promote such collaboration. Rich potential for partnerships exists in domains such as aerostructures and applied, experimental and computational aerodynamics, etc. The launch presentation will consist of an overview of the AeroAfrica-EU project activities, South Africa's key aeronautics and air transport research competencies of interest to Europe, as well as an example of current fruitful cooperation (Fraunhofer's engagement in South Africa.) A sandwich lunch and refreshments will be served to permit networking.

The event details are as follow:
