A workshop entitled "Predicting the Ocean for the 21st Century. Optimising the Observations Network for the Atlantic and Adjacent Seas" will be held in Rome on 8 and 9 March 1999.

The workshop is being jointly organised by PROMISE (Pre-Operational Modelling in the Seas of Europe), and EuroGOOS (European Global Ocean Observing System).

The purpose of the workshop is to detail issues of immediate concern to the scientific community which were recently identified in the publication "Science Base", produced by the Science Advisory Working Group of EuroGOOS. The main issues to be discussed are:

- To develop science, technology, and infrastructure to couple ocean-atmosphere models;
- To extend the range of forecast models to include more chemical and biological processes;
- To identify key scientific 'gaps'.

PROMISE is an EC MAST programme examining the development of generic models for waves, tides, and turbulence and assessing these against 'bench-mark' data sets. EUROGOOS is an association of agencies to maximise European benefits from operational oceanography within the framework of GOOS (the Global Ocean Observing System).
