The European Commission, DG XII, is supporting the EU Biotechnology Advanced Workshop "Communication Skills for Scientists" in Cambridge, UK, between 21 and 23 April 1999, being organised by Goldwyn Associates.

This is a practical workshop to develop participants' ability to be lucid and to communicate well with non-scientists.

The 25 participants will be required to work intensively for three days, during which they will receive high-quality training from some of the best science film makers and newspaper journalists in Europe. Each participant is expected to bring a prepared presentation of about 10 minutes of the kind needed professionally, which will be refined and then presented to an industrialist/businessman for feedback.

Applicants, who must be citizens of an EU Member State or Norway, Iceland, Israel or Liechtenstein, are invited to send:

- A letter explaining their motivation to attend;
- A 100-word description of the presentation that they would be intending to make;
- Their CV.

There will be grants for 12 young scientists, which will be allocated preferentially to candidates from public institutions that are not well endowed in less favoured regions.
