RELATE - REsearch LAbs for TEaching journalists: new application period

After the first application period (August 2009) RELATE project has selected 17 participants for the 1st round of visits (which will take place in November 2009) to European research laboratories.
REsearch LAbs for TEaching Journalists is an EU-funded project that aims to bridge the gap between science and society.
The project brings scientists face to face with next generation journalists, who will then ‘relate’ their experiences for the benefits and impacts of various scientific fields.
The young journalists will produce articles, audio and/or video productions aimed at the general public.
They will ‘make sense of science’, while remaining true to principles of good journalism.
• The students are sent on a week-long visit with other students from across Europe and work as real journalists: attending press conferences, interviewing researchers or filming lab work, with a view to producing an article or video.
• The students receive a contribution covering the travel and accommodation expenses (up to 1.000,00 €, depending on location).
• The students receive valuable advice on pitching their work to newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, etc.
More than 165 applications have been received for the first period. Those who applied and have not been selected will be equally eligible for the 2nd and 3rd round of visits (March and November 2010).
In addition, RELATE wants to offer the opportunity of participating to a wider number of young journalists and opens a second period for applications for the next two rounds: from 1st October to 30th November 2009.
If you are a young journalist from a European university this is a new opportunity for you to apply!
If you are the responsible of a lab benefiting from EC support you can participate in RELATE as well! You could host some of the young journalists at your lab and benefit from the promotion obtained thanks to their work.
