Do you want to know where your food comes from?
Scientists, regulators and food industry representatives from all around the world will be gathering at Autoworld in Brussels to hear the
latest developments for tracing and verifying the origin of our food. They will be taking part in the final conference of the European Union’s TRACE project, a 5 year international multidisciplinary research programme that aims to improve consumer confidence in the origin of our food. Key outputs showcased at the conference, “How to trace the origin of your food” will be analytical technologies that can confirm where a food product came from; a traceability language that allows different traceability systems to exchange information with each other thereby permitting faster and more efficient recall, and fingerprinting procedures that can differentiate different types of food such as olive oil, beers, meat and honey. A web- based system will be demonstrated that uses “food maps” derived from geological and climate based models of stable isotope ratios to assess whether the provenance of a food product really conforms with the description on the label. The conference will also see the release of a large database of DNA sequences, methods and protocols that can be used by industry and authorities to identify the species and variety of a range food products, e.g. the type of cattle that our meat has come from and in some cases even the colour of the cow’s hair. The technologies have been tested by industries in Europe and China and have already spawned several applications in the meat sector.
