Lectures will cover advances in computational fluid dynamics
The programme will target CFD algorithm and code developers to a specialist level, focusing on computation of compressible flow with low Mach Number effects. Critical topics which to be studied include acoustic and velocity scale at low Mach Number, and low-speed combustion and flame propagation, two-phase flows in pressurisation and plume formation, and flow in high-lift devices in aeronautics.
The following topics will be covered in detail:
- Finite-volume and finite-element schemes for low Mach Number compressible flows;
- Pre-conditioning methods for removing stiffness due to low Mach Number viscous effects;
- Adaptivity and error estimation for a finite element method applied to low-speed combustion;
- Hyperbolic pde models for two-phase flow, including flux-vector splitting and approximate Riemann solvers. Low Mach Number and two-phase flow extensions of the AUSM scheme;
- A unified staggered grid pressure correction method for incompressible and compressible flow;
- Application in thermohydraulics, cavitating flow and low-speed combustion.
The course is being organised in association with the European Center Luc Gauthier-CSAMI, and the support of the European Commission, DG XII, project, TMR, with the scientific community on Numerical Methods for Mathematical Modelling of FWO-Flanders.
