Businesses can obtain help to be eco-friendly

Information on some of the European Union's environmental legislation will be given out at a workshop in Rome on 15 April 1999. The Co-operative Institute for Innovation (ICIE) and the Company for Youth Entrepeneurship (IG) are promoting this initiative to disseminate information about EC regulation No. 1836/93, otherwise known as EMAS. The workshop forms part of the OPET NETWORK project run by the European Commission, DG XIII, within the Innovation programme. It aims to stimulate businesses that want to keep the quality of their production process at a high environmental level, or to use environmental credentials as a sales aid in the European market.
The workshop will emphasise that adopting an environmental management system makes it possible to achieve financial returns through savings in costs, prevention of risks and reductions in down-time.
The workshop will also be used as a platform to show a case study of how a programme already oriented to environmental legislation in product-development has helped firms to reduce redesign and reprocessing work, as well as the times to introduce products to market and the risks that new products may have to be withdrawn
The event will also highlight how banks are focusing on environmental performance indicators to assess the overall reliability of enterprises in credit and low-cost management, in order to protect themselves from risks of insolvency in case of damage to the environment.
