Ethical and Policy Implications of Global Mobility and Security - A workshop organized in the scope of the RISE project

A high level workshop on “Ethical and Policy Implications of Global Mobility and Security” will take place in Brussels, Berlaymont Building - Schuman Room, on 25 & 26 March 2010. Speakers include Mr Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission, and Transport Commissioner; Mr Jaak Aaviksoo, Estonian Minister of Defense; Mr Peter Hustinx, European Data Protection Supervisor.

25 March 2010 - 26 March 2010
Belgium
The workshop, chaired by Prof Margit Sutrop, will be held in the framework of the RISE project (Rising Pan-European and International Awareness of Biometrics and Security Ethics, (www.riseproject.eu). RISE is a “track 2” initiative, funded by the European Commission in the scope of FP7 Science in Society, which aims to provide an open, international forum to discuss ethical, privacy and social issues raised by biometrics and security technologies.
RISE aims to complement bilateral and multilateral forums sponsored at governmental level. In particular the project aims to deepen, enlarge and ensure continuity to international dialogue already initiated by the international conferences on ethics and biometrics organised by the EC DG Research and the US DHS Privacy Office respectively in Brussels and Washington DC in 2005 and 2006.

Main focus of the workshop will be the multifaceted prism of fundamental rights, privacy and security in relation to the implementation of biometrics, body scanners and other security technologies. During the workshop a Policy Report on “Whole Body Imaging Technology in European Airports: the Ethical and Policy Context” will be presented.

Attendance is only by invitation. Places are very limited. If you are interested in attending, please send your name, affiliation and a short letter of motivation to the RISE project coordinator, Prof. Emilio Mordini, at cssc@cssc.eu by Wednesday, 10 March 2010.
