Five years ago, it was mainly technical experts, researchers and business leaders who used the Internet, but it is becoming a truly mass media for households and offices everywhere.

The conference "Information society and local media in Europe" will be a meeting place for researchers, journalists and politicians to analyse this new role of the Internet, and its implications for regional and local media in Europe.

The local and regional media play an important role in creating public awareness and are integrating the Internet into their traditional activities. This conference, which will take place in Aalborg, Denmark, between 26 and 28 February, will ask two main questions in relation to this:

- How local and regional media cover issues relate to the information society;
- How local and regional media are entering the world of the Internet to offer new services to their readers, listeners and viewers in order to make the new medium more attractive for the ordinary citizens in their daily lives.

The conference is being organised by the Department of Information and Media Science at the University of Århus , with the support of the Information Society Project Office (ISPO) of the European Commission.
