OLED micro display for Multimedia applications

The development of a new type of OLED micro displays is the goal of the European research project HYPOLED (FP7, ICT-2007.3.2-217067) which is coordinated by Fraunhofer IPMS. The results of HYPOLED are presented at the booth of the institute during SID DisplayWeek 2010.

More and more, multimedia content is consumed using portable consumer electronic devices. However, the integrated display of such appliances is typically not large enough to present the content to the user in an adequate manner. Solutions to overcome this dilemma which are currently favoured include Head Mounted Displays as well as micro projection units. Both approaches require miniaturized displays, which offer high resolution image display while preserving a rather small size.

Based on a VGA full colour micro display, a Head Mounted Display has been realized that allows watching videos without disturbance by the environment. The virtual size which is comparable to the one achievable with large area displays. By using three monochrome VGA micro displays which achieve very high luminance due to the use of highly efficient OLED materials, a full colour OLED projector could also been realized.
A so called Mediabox, also the result of the HYPOLED project, drives both the HMD and the projector and allows playback of content stored on flash drives, reception of Digital TV channels, as well as playback of video streams received via Wireless LAN.
All those demonstrators will be shown at SID DisplayWeek 2010.
