Beating bad blooms
Algae are vital for the health of the planet, but some harmful algae and red tides are a significant and growing threat to human health, economics, and fishing resources.
The main goal of the conference is to share and develop mechanisms for minimizing the impacts of harmful algae and their toxins on human health, commerce , fishing resources, and marine ecosystems, throughout and beyond the Asia-Pacific region.
The meeting is therefore aiming to provide managers with training and exposure to current methods and strategies for managing harmful algal blooms and their impacts. It is also intended to provide a basis for continuing efforts towards the development of regional cooperation, coordination, and compatible procedures.
The symposium will be further be used as a forum to explore the possibility for compatible regulatory structures related to harmful algae, to prevent disruption to trade.
The conference will feature invited and contributed papers, poster presentations and discussions. It will produce a brief guidance document, outlining management options that will assist various economies in improving their own harmful algal bloom programmes.
The conference is being sponsored by Asia-Pacific Economic cooperation (APEC) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) which is affiliated to UNESCO. The EU Reference Laboratory for Marine Biotoxins will be represented.
