The steps required to advance towards sustainable development in the Mediterranean region will be explained at "South meets North", a conference to be held in Cagliari, Italy, between 17 and 19 March 1999.

The European event - a dialogue on sustainable development - is being organised by a scientific committee formed by representatives from European institutions to disseminate their findings from previous discussions on the subject.

This group has singled out transport, agriculture, tourism and local integrated disciplines as strategic fields for planning local initiatives and devising a working methodology, and will run workshops on each of these areas during the conference.

The event will also feature key note lectures as the group's priorities in organizing the conference are to spread the word about successful projects from the past and to support the realisation of new projects.

"South meets North" has the support of the European Commission, DG XI, the Italian Government Presidential Council, the Italian Ministry of Environment, and Sardinia.
