An international showcase for CHAARM project: The International MICROBICIDES Conference 2010

The International Microbicides Conference 2010 will include in this year programme a dedicated presentation of CHAARM project, funded under the FP7, committed to the research on microbicides.

22 May 2010 - 25 May 2010

In the 6th edition of the International Microbicides Conference, that will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 22-25, 2010, also CHAARM will be a protagonist.
A dedicated presentation will be given by Charles Lacey, from the University of York and one of the 31 partners of the CHAARM project, on the 3rd day of the conference in the session devoted to the forward looking activities of the research on Microbicides.
This presentation will give CHAARM project the opportunity to grab the attention of the research community attending the conference and increase its visibility at international level.
The presence of the project will be also assured by the other project partners that have been selected to participate in the conference. All these partners will deliver a number of varied and diversified lectures and poster presentations on biologicalchemical
Microbicides related issues, presenting some of the results achieved by their research teams. These presentations will increase the project visibility at international level and among the large microbicides actors community.
As the project coordinator Prof. Charles Kelly, from the King's College London, pointed out “The participation of CHAARM in the Microbicides 2010 meeting is crucial to ensure the dissemination of CHAARM project objectives and research strategies to a wider audience in order to raise the profile of the project.” Apart from an increase in its visibility “The project will benefit from
partners sharing ideas and developing potential collaborations with other researchers in the field.” Prof. Kelly added.
When highlighting the importance of the broaden collaboration among partners, fundamental when it comes to research issues, Prof. Lacey argued that “In the first instance, the CHAARM project illustrates networking and the ability to cross-fertilise between different groups thus amplifying progress. In the medium and longer term we want to produce tangible scientific results though!”
On the importance of participating in such an international event also Prof. Kelly expressed favorably, considering the conference as an arena “to facilitate an exchange of knowledge and ideas with other specialists in the field which could enable new research strategies to be devised, thus enriching the development of the project.”
The MICROBICIDES 2010 will be fully dedicated to future perspective of the HIV prevention, as the conference title stresses “Microbicides: Building Bridges in HIV Prevention”.
Thanks to this initiative, the organizers aim at promoting an increasing collaboration between basic, clinical and behavioral scientists and bridging emerging research with community partners and advocacy groups involved in HIV prevention.
CHAARM project surely can offer an example of bridging the 2 sides of Atlantic Ocean, at least far as research on HIV is concerned. With regard to this, Prof. Lacey affirmed that “EMPRO (EU project funded under the FP6) set the tone in terms of involving US experts in a European program, and thus fostering US-EU collaboration. So now CHAARM actually has one US partner at the outset, and I think that many of the European partners including myself feel committed to building on such collaborative EU-US links”.
A promising commitment to launch further the research on microbicides on the path already undertaken.CHAARM - Combined Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Microbicides project is co-funded under the FP7, Framework Programme
(FP7), for Research and Development of the European Commission, call HEALTH-2009-2.3.2-3 Discovery and/or development
of new and promising anti-HIV microbicides.
CHAARM project, aims to further develop the research on microbicides as a promising system to reduce a person's risk of HIV
infection.
The project is active since the 1st of January 2010 and will run until December 2014.
